| Abstract: | The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of leader values and behavior, specifically a Superintendent of a Texas Independent School District, upon the values and behavior of the followers. The primary paradigm for gathering data was naturalistic inquiry through the conducting of in-depth interviews with the Superintendent and 53 key individuals, the collecting of referential materials, and 22 months of in-depth observations. The secondary paradigm was rationalistic inquiry which utilized the standardized instrument, the Value Survey. The central question was: What are the value dimensions and in what ways do the related behaviors of a leader influence the values and behaviors of the follower? The literature revealed the emerging concept of "transformational leadership" which goes beyond the focus of traditional concepts of leadership. The data, after being gathered, categorized, and assessed, indicated that the Superintendent was the key influencer. His influence was based upon a commitment to the district's values, visibility and contact within the district, an awareness of all district operations, and an ability to respond to follower input. The highest value of the Superintendent and district was the enhancement of the education of the students.. |
