| Abstract: | The inheritance of cold tolerance and number of genes or effective factors were determined from replicated trials grown in the field at El Batan and Chapingo, Mexico in 1987. The analysis of variance of pooled data from the two experiments indicated that Generation x Location was significant for Total Caryopses Per Panicle (TCPP) and Index of Caryopses Per Panicle (ICPP) but not for Percent of Fertile Pollen Grains (PFPG). From the comparison of two models to estimate genetic effects in all generations, the model with epistatic interactions was more efficient, and additive genetic effects were the most important. A model to estimate genetic variances was applied to generations of crosses among susceptible and cold tolerant genotypes. In general, dominance variation was larger than additive and environmental variances. This response was considered to bias in the application of the model, because of violations in the assumption of equal variances, since susceptible parents had zero variance (no caryopses or pollen grains were produced). Direction of dominance was significant and toward the cold tolerant parent, indicating that the gene or genes involved in expression of the character were dominant and contained in the tolerant parent. Maternal effects from the cold tolerant parent, for all three characters, were detected. Heterosis for RTx430 x VA-110 were 90 percent for TCPP, 30 percent for ICPP, and no heterosis for PFPG. These results suggest the possibilities of creating cold tolerant hybrids, by single combinations, which would have high yield capacity, as well as wide adaptation.. |
