| Abstract: | The purpose of this study was to trace and record in chronological order the significant events and persons comprising the history of physical education at Texas A&M University from the college's inception (1876) to the present (1988). The historical method was utilized in conducting the research for this study. Information was obtained through primary sources when available. These sources included interviews with former students, former and present faculty members, and former heads as well as the present head of the Health and Physical Education Department. The TAMU Archives and Manuscript Collection was utilized extensively in this study. College bulletins, catalogues, yearbooks, local and college newspapers, magazines, and published biographies were also used. Collected data were subjected to external and internal criticism. This study was concerned with the chronological history of physical education at TAMU. The initial period in TAMU's history (i.e., 1876-1924) was covered first. Next, the years in which the Department of Physical Education has been in existence (i.e., 1924-1988) were examined. The topics presented in the chapters emphasized the role, where relevant, of military activities, clubs, organizations, athletics, faculty and staff, curricula, and facilities as a means of developing physical education. Events and persons were described and evaluated. Conclusions: 1. It appears as though the Department of Health and Physical Education administrators have been pragmatic with regards to providing leadership and direction to respond to problems within the department. 2. The Department of Health and Physical Education played an important role in TAMC's war efforts by providing physical training for future military personnel. 3. The Department of Health and Physical Education and the Department of Athletics have cooperated in the utilization of facilities for both physical education classes and athletic events. 4. The Department of Health and Physical Education and the Recreational-Sports Program have been closely aligned to provide for the needs of the students. 5. The administration of the Department of Health and Physical Education has hired the necessary faculty to conduct research and broaden the academic scope of the department. |
