| Abstract: | A study was conducted using 50 diverse cultivars of sorghum, to study their yield response under varying moisture stressed field environments. The trials consisted of a randomized block design with three replications, data were collected on agronomic variables at eight locations over a period of two years. Cultivar mean yields across locations and the variability of yield proved satisfactory in classifying the cultivars into groups based on their yield performance. A multivariate approach was pursued in analyzing variability of yield in terms of agronomic variables. The variables found most important in maintaining stable yields were maturity, panicle exertion, plant height, threshing percentage, 300 kernel weight, and number panicles. Linear correlations showed that the higher yielding cultivars had a positive correlation between yield and test weight, and a negative relationship between yield and 300 kernel weight. The more stable cultivars showed a positive correlation between yield and threshing percentage, and a negative correlation between maturity and yield. A study was conducted in aeroponic culture to study the root systems of the 50 cultivars. The experimental design was a randomized block design of six replications. A positive correlation was noted between height and the length of axial roots among the cultivars found to be higher yielding in the field. These cultivars also showed a positive correlation between number of leaves and root dry weight. Number of root aces and length of root axes were found to be important in determining 300 kernel weight. Height and maturity in the field were found to be related to leaf area, culm/sheath dry weight, and height in aeroponics. |
