| Abstract: | This study sought to identify the reasons for nonparticipation in organized educational activities by adults aged 65 to 74 years. The literature describes a number of barriers to older adults participating in organized educational activities. Little of the literature describes such barriers in the older adult's own words. The researcher used an unstructured review approach to achieve an open and frank exchange between interviewer and interviewees. This study was based on a naturalistic paradigm. Interviews were held with 33 individuals at seven Senior Centers over a 2-month period. Exploratory data analysis was used to analyze the data. Content analysis was completed by the researcher and two peer reviewers. From a set of factors described by the interviewees, two major categories emerged which described the basis for nonparticipation in organized educational activities by these adults: (a) a negative self-image, (b) lack of interest in the courses offered. This study was conducted that (a) a negative self-image as learners was a major factor in nonparticipation, (b) the role that lack of formal education plays in nonparticipation is not clear, (c) a lack of interest in courses offered was a factor in nonparticipation, (d) self-directed education played a role in the lives of those involved in this study. Additional conclusions drawn were: (a) the interviewees saw continuing education as important; (b) the education needs of older adults are not being met; (c) the number of course offerings, at those Centers involved in this study, populated predominantly by minorities, was sparse.. |
