| Abstract: | The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between marital satisfaction of chemically dependent women and elected psychological and psychosocial predictor variables. The first objective was to explore the relationship between the psychological variables of depression, self-esteem, and perceived family of origin health and the criterion variable of marital satisfaction of chemically dependent women. The second objective was to explore the relationship between the psychosocial variables of stressful life events, perceived chemical abuse of the spouse and yearly family income and the criterion variable of marital satisfaction of chemically dependent women. The third objective was to determine the optimal predictors of marital satisfaction. Subjects were married women who were entering treatment for chemical dependence. The criterion was measured by the Marital Satisfaction Scale-Form C. The predictors were measured by the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, Family of Origin Scale, Schedule of Recent Experiences, and a questionnaire collecting descriptive information. The results indicated that there was a significant relationship between the combined psychological variables of depression, self-esteem and family of origin health and marital satisfaction. There was a significant relationship between the combined psychosocial variables of stressful life events, perceived chemical abuse of the spouse and yearly family income and marital satisfaction. The optimal predictors of marital satisfaction were depression, perceived family of origin health, perceived chemical abuse of the spouse, and yearly family income. |
