| Abstract: | The purpose of this investigation was to describe the cognitive interpersonal problem-solving skills of Mexican American preschool while solving hypothetical-reflective conflict situations. To provide a perspective on social interpersonal skills development, an overview of research in interpersonal problem solving was presented, with an emphasis on language development and second language acquisition. Subjects for the descriptive study were 39 children ages four and five, who were participants in two Head Start programs. Children in the first group were in a central all day program; whereas, children in the second group were participants in an in-home program. Parents of all children completed a preschool behavior rating scale. Oral language proficiency was assessed using the Preschool Language Assessment Scales. Children's videotaped problem-solving attempts were scored by observers. |
