Description
Abstract:This research involves the design and development of a software engineering environment for construction of microcomputer based expert systems that require data from external databases. The research investigated the nature of communications with external database systems and the concept that data resource knowledge consists of knowing how to perform accesses and retrievals. Accesses are those actions necessary to evoke a desired response from an external database, and retrievals are those actions necessary, once the correct response has been elicited, to identify and retrieve the required data from the response. The knowledge of how to perform accesses and retrievals can be incorporated into C data structures and compact functions for processing the completed data structures. These data structures and functions are easily generated under program control, and then can be stored in and retrieved from a database. The research resulted in design and development of an editing environment for the construction of microcomputer based expert systems that require data from external databases, and this has been implemented in the Data Resource Knowledge Acquisition and Retrieval Tool (DRKART). DRKART contains facilities for building the expert system's knowledge base of rules, and for building the procedural language external interface used to extend the expert system's capabilities beyond those built into its shell..
