| Abstract: | The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of alternative inservice education approaches that might be used to improve teachers' instructional competence. With the development of the Texas Teacher Appraisal System (TTAS), implemented in the Texas public schools in September of 1986, came the question of whether or not teachers could be trained to behave in the classroom in a manner consistent with the TTAS expectations. Since one domain of the TTAS focuses on teachers' use of strategies, school districts found themselves responsible for providing training to assist teachers in using instructional strategies more effectively. Ninety teachers, from rural and suburban school districts, were randomly assigned to one of three groups. These groups consisted of a group that received formal inservice through four videotaped sessions, a group that was given materials to read and assimilate independently relating to instructional strategies, and a control group that did not receive the videotaped sessions or the reading materials. Each group was then divided into two categories according to years of teaching experience. One group included those with 11 or more years of experience. The other group included those with less than 11 years of experience. Using the TTAS, two trained appraisers evaluated each subject in accordance with state guidelines. A factorial analysis of variance was performed to detect whether the proposed treatments, years of teaching experience, and their interaction influenced scores on the instructional strategies domain of the TTAS. Results revealed that there was no significant difference among the three treatment groups or between the two levels of teaching experience. The interaction of these two main effects was also not significant. Alpha for all of these tests was set at the.05 level. |
