Abstract:	This dissertation seeks to establish the eighteenth-century fictional prose writer Sarah Fielding as a mid-century link between Mary Astell and Mary Wollstonecraft, feminists who opened and closed the eighteenth century with their polemical treatises on the place of women. After a brief examination of Fielding's personal and societal milieu, this study examines Fielding's ten major identified works, seeking to determine her methods and themes of protest. From her first major work of The Adventures of David Simple to her final publication of Xenophon's MEMOIRS OF SOCRATES, Fielding creates strong, fictional women characters who demonstrate non-typical views about marriage, education, and employment, themes which both Astell and Wollstonecraft proclaim in their non-fiction prose works.
