| Abstract: | Forty lactating Holstein cows were fed either: (1) a negative control diet (no cottonseed except 7.5% cottonseed meal); (2) a positive control with 15% whole cottonseed (WCS); (3) WCS replaced with a simulated product containing tallow; (4) WCS replaced with a simulated product containing calcium soaps; or (5) WCS replaced with a simulated product containing calcium soaps plus NaCl. Dry matter intake was not affected (P >.05) by diet. Digestibilities of ADF and crude protein were decreased by diets which contained supplemental fat. Milk fat percentage was depressed in cows on all diets when compared to the WCS diet. The simulated WCS products depressed milk protein percentage. Stearic acid was lowest in the milk of cows on the WCS diet. Plasma cholesterol and plasma triglycerides were not affected by diet. Twelve lactating Holstein cows were offered a choice of either: (1) WCS and a mixed ration; (2) a simulated WCS product containing tallow and a mixed ration; (3) a simulated WCS product containing calcium soapstock and a mixed ration; and (4) a simulated WCS product containing a combination product and a mixed ration, in a 4 x 4 Latin square design. Total dry matter intakes were not different across diets. Mixed ration intakes were highest for diets 1 and 4. The cows offered diets 2 and 3 consumed more WCS simulated product to equalize total dry matter intake. Forty lactating Holstein cows were offered diets containing: (1) 0 g niacin plus 0% WCS; (2) 0 g niacin plus 15% WCS; (3) 6 g niacin plus 0% WCS; and (4) 6 g niacin plus 15% WCS. Cows consuming diet 1 had the highest dry matter intakes. Fat corrected milk, milk fat percentage, milk protein percentage and casein N were highest for diet 1. Insulin tended to be elevated in cows on the diets containing niacin, yet glucose was not affected. Plasma niacin was elevated in cows on the diets supplemented with niacin compared to diet 1. Plasma amino acids were slightly affected by treatments. |
