| Abstract: | This dissertation combines research in the areas of replacement and machine interference. During the past three decades there has been a great deal of research in the optimal replacement of stochastically deteriorating equipment and research in queueing systems with a finite calling populations. Surprisingly, there has been a lack of research when these two areas are combined. We combine these areas by analyzing replacement problems within the context of controlling a G/M/1 queueing system with a finite calling population. For a two-machine one repairman problem, we derive the steady-state probabilities and develop the cost structure associated with a control limit policy. The control policy is a simple age dependent control policy described by the control limit, t*. To evaluate the cost equation for a given control limit, computational procedures are presented when the failure time is governed by phase-type distributions. Two different sets of example problems are provided for a fixed control policy. |
