| Abstract: | The distinctive Andean section Oligandrae of the genus Sida (Malvaceae) is systematically treated based on floral and vegetative morphology, palynology, and ecogeography. The nine names available for the section correspond to only four organisms for which the correct names are Sida oligandra Schumann, Sida decandra Fries, Sida palmata Cavanilles, and Sida jatrophoides L'Heritier. Complete synonymies and descriptions are given for each species. Phenetically and phylogenetically S. oligandra and S. decandra are closely related, sharing a syndrome of characters indicating facultative xenogamy. The group's distribution is centered on the western slopes of the Andes in northern Peru. All species are herbaceous weeds intolerant to frost. S. palmata and S. decandra are mesophytes restricted to wetter areas of so southern Ecuador and northern Peru. The principal distribution of Sida oligandra and S. jatrophoides is dryer central and southern Peru. The morphologically variable Sida oligandra exploits a broad range of more xeric climes and crosses the Andes into western Bolivia. The distribution of xerophytic S. jatrophoides is principally coastal with an outlying population in the Galapagos Islands. |
