The leaf preceding title page has the "thumb mark" (in the 2nd state, shorter form) receipt of Thomas Bewick, signed by Thomas Bewick and Robert Elliot Bewick and dated 1st October 1818. Also a vignette of Newcastle with sea-weed printed across it. Signatures: a-c₋p4₋s, B-Z₋p4₋s, 2A-2Z₋p4₋s, 3A-3B₋p4₋s. A receipt in facsimile handwriting is inserted preceding the frontispiece. The receipt contains the impression of a piece of seaweed in red ink superimposed on the copperplate vignette. Below the vignette is Thomas Bewick's thumbprint, with his name (in autograph) above the thumbprint. Imperial paper, thick wove with 1806 watermark. 500 copies of imperial paper issue printed. The Cushing Library/Kelsey Americana copy lacks the page with the thumbprint and seaweed vignette. |
