| Abstract: | The purpose of the study was to investigate what effect prison vocational education training programs had on the work values of mentally retarded (MR) inmates. Secondary purposes were to investigate differences between the MR prison sample and a norm sample from a work values inventory, investigate demographic variables of the MR sample, investigate the perceptions of the MR offenders concerning their prison vocational education training, and investigate relationships between crimes committed and work values. The investigation was conducted by using the pretest-posttest design. A sample of inmates was selected from the Mentally Retarded Offender Program (MROP) located at the Beto 1 prison facility operated by the Texas Department of Corrections near Palestine, Texas. The pretest and posttest were administered during the months of November, 1987 and April, 1988 with the assistance of the supervisor of vocational evaluation. Nevill and Super's Values Scale was the instrument used to measure the work values. Analysis of data concerning the 21 values associated with work was accomplished by using the independent and dependent t-test procedure. Conclusions and findings were: 1. Significant differences in the pretest and posttest means were found in the values of Altruism, Risk, and Physical Prowess for the MROP sample. 2. Significant differences in an adult norm sample and and the MROP sample were found in the values of Ability Utilization, Achievement, Aesthetics, Altruism, Autonomy, Personal Development, Physical Activity, Risk, Working Conditions, Cultural Identity, and Physical Prowess. 3. The average MROP inmate was a 29 year old single Black male exhibiting an IQ of 66 and a 3rd grade level in reading and math. The average inmate also achieved the 8th grade, had no or limited vocational training, worked from one to four years in unskilled or semiskilled jobs, and was in prison for the second, time with a conviction of crimes against property. 4. Inmates responded favorably to instruction and feedback from teachers and unfavorably to the reading, writing, and language development portion of vocational education. 5. More MROP inmates committed crimes against property than crimes against persons. |
