| Abstract: | The purpose of this study was to investigate the psychometric properties of the Haak Sentence Completion using a 3-point scoring system. The subjects selected for the study were 100 boys ages 6-12 who were referred for evaluation of emotional disturbance in a public school setting. Of the 100 subjects, 50 were found to be emotionally disturbed while the remaining 50 were determined not to be emotionally disturbed. All children had been administered the Haak Sentence Completion and the parent and teacher versions of the Child Behavior Checklist were obtained from each child's parent(s) and teacher. The Haak Sentence Completion was scored by three graduate students in educational psychology. Scoring by the raters was used to establish interrater reliability for the items of the Haak Sentence Completion. Of the 87 items, 42 were found to have adequate interrater reliability. The 42 items were used to conduct the remainder of the analysis. A factor analysis of the items yielded two factors that had adequate internal reliability and could significantly discriminate between the emotionally disturbed and non-emotionally disturbed groups. One of the factors related to perceptions of self and others and the other factor related to achievement. No strong relationship was found between the items and factors of the Haak Sentence Completion and the parent and teacher versions of the Child Behavior Checklist. A significant though low correlation was found between the factor related to perception of self and others and the externalizing problem behavior factor of the parent form of the Child Behavior Checklist. A series of discriminant function analysis's indicated that the parent version of the Child Behavior Checklist could correctly classify 68% of the subjects. When the factors of the Haak Sentence Completion were combined, 60% of the subjects could be correctly classified. The combination of the parent form of the Child Behavior Checklist and the factors of the Haak Sentence Completion resulted in 70% of the subjects being correctly classified. The results were discussed in terms of the literature reviewed, practical implications, and the need for further research. |
