| Abstract: | The objective of this research is to introduce and investigate the use of a constant work-in-process (WIP) production control strategy. The strategy is implemented via the use of characteristic curves which show the relationship between WIP and production rate and between WIP and flow time. The performance measures used are lateness, percent of tardy jobs and average WIP. In simulated cases using three common queueing disciplines, operating on a mixed job/flow shop, the strategy equals or betters the performance of the same shop when using either no input control or due date driven input control the technique is shown to have sufficient potential to justify considerable future work concentrated on refinement and application. |
