| Abstract: | The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of individual and small group cooperative learning with a technology-based instructional delivery system to teach CPR. To accomplish this purpose, six research questions were examined. These questions were designed to determine if there were significant differences in cognitive achievement scores, attainment of psychomotor performance skills, learning time, confidence to perform CPR, types of cognitive errors committed, and types of psychomotor performance errors made among subjects who undergo CPR training in an individually structured learning mode and those who undergo training in a cooperatively structured learning mode as dyads and triads. The sample for the study consisted of 77 adult military personnel who volunteered to participate. The average age of the participants was 21 years old. The sample included three females. Participants were randomly assigned to three learning conditions: individual learners (control group) and learners in dyadic and triadic cooperative learning groups (treatment groups). The six conclusions of the study indicated that there were no significant differences in the cognitive achievement scores and psychomotor skill performance evaluations among individual learners and cooperative group learners. (Ninety-six percent of the subjects attained a passing score on the CPR cognitive test; whereas 8H percent of the subjects passed the psychomotor skill performance evaluation.) Time to learn was significantly less for cooperative group learners than for individual learners. Cooperative group learners also expressed a higher degree of confidence to perform CPR than individual learners. There were no significant differences in types of cognitive or psychomotor performance errors among individual and cooperative group learners. |
