Description
Abstract:A new apparatus has been designed, fabricated, assembled, and tested to verify a new experimental technique. This technique combines two established gas expansion techniques: the gasometer and Burnett techniques. The apparatus is capable of operating from 250 to 450 K and at pressures up to 105 MPa. The apparatus was tested initially with carbon dioxide and nitrogen to determine the temperature response and the calibration constants. Gasometer expansions were performed with dichlorodifluoromethane at 375 K and pressures up to 74 M Pa to validate the cell constant obtained with nitrogen. PV T measurements then were made on trichlorofluoromethane, dichlorodifluoromethane, chlorotrifluorom ethane, and chlorodifluoromethane at 375 and 425 K, and pressures up to 1.38 M Pa. Second virial coefficients derived from the experimental d ata agree with previous measurements within ± 5%. Four correlations (Abbott, Tarakad and Danner, Tsonopoulos, and Vetere) were tested with the second virial coefficients obtained in this investigation as well as the previous measurements. The correlations describe the second virial coefficients for the four pure refrigerants within an average absolute percentage deviation of 8.5%.
