| Abstract: | We designed and constructed a high pressure isochoric apparatus for fast and accurate PVT and phase equilibria measurements. The apparatus can measure isochoric (P-T at constant V) data of non-corrosive fluids over a wide range of pressure (7-105 MPa) and temperature (100-450). Densities are determined by measuring one isotherm (P-V at constant T) with another apparatus, e.g., a pycnometer or a Burnett apparatus. Temperature measurements are accurate to 10 mK on IPTS-68 and precise to 1 mK. Pressure measurements are accurate to 10 kPa and precise to 2 kPa. This apparatus can measure one point in about 20 minutes for points 2 K apart and in about 50 minutes for points 10 K apart. Although the apparatus is not automated completely at this time, full automation can be achieved easily. We measured 17 phase boundary points for two compositions (0.4459 and 0.5037 CO2 mol fraction) of CO2/N2 binary mixtures in a temperature range of 207 - 268 K and a pressure range of 10.8 - 21.5 MPa. The estimated accuracy of these points is ± 10 mK in temperature and ± 17 kPa in pressure. We determined the saturation densities for 14 of the phase boundary points. The densities are estimated to be accurate to 0.5 kg/m^3. We also provide qualitative information on the fluid-solid phase boundary for the CO2/N2 mixtures under study in this work. |
