Abstract:The ion-molecule reactions O₂+O ⁻₂n = O ⁻₂n ₊₂, n=1-5, were studied in the pressure range of 1.5 to 12.0 torr and a temperature range of 77 to 373° K. The reactions occurred in a stream of partially ionized oxygen gas. Ions were sampled with a time-of-flight mass spectrometer and the ionization chamber pressure was measured with a calibrated mechanical manometer. Equilibrium constants were determined from the relative concentrations of detected negative oxygen ions adjacent in mass and the ionization chamber pressure; Δ H°(t-subscript) and ΔS°(t-subscript) were calculated from the temperature variation of the equilibrium constants for each reaction (n). Two vibrational models were used to estimate the vibrational frequencies from the entropy data. These frequencies were then used to correct ΔH°(t-subscript) to ΔO°(k-subscript) for both models to obtain bond energies for each cluster.
