| Item Description: | At head of title: The American historical association. "Prepared and published under the direction of the American historical association from the income of the Albert J. Beveridge memorial fund." Planned as a second volume in a series of three of which the first, Life and labor in the old South, was published in 1929. Though he had not completed the second volume in every detail, Profesor Phillips had made sufficient progress by the spring of 1932 to give its main content in six lectures at Northwestern university entitled "The course of the South to secession". After his death these lectures were published in Georgia historical quarterly (Dec. 1936-Mar. 1938) They are here republished as they were left by Professor Phillips, with slight editing and as they were published originally in the Georgia historical quarterly. cf. introduction. "Included in this volume [pages 151-165] is [the author's] "The central theme of southern history' which served as the basis of a discussion at the 1928 meeting of the American historical association and which was published in American historical review [Oct.1928]"--introduction." |
