| Abstract: | The purpose of this study was to determine, through a questionnaire, the perceptions of chief administrators of student affairs in Texas colleges and universities regarding their actual and ideal administrative roles and responsibilities. Eighty-five percent of the Texas institutions of higher education belonging to the Texas Association of College and University Student Personnel Administrators (TACUSPA) participated in the study. Descriptive data were analyzed through the use of frequency distributions. A t Test was used to determine the statistical relationship between the actual and ideal roles and responsibilities of selected chief administrator of student affairs variables. Analysis of variance was also used to determine the statistical relationship among groups, in regard to associate, bachelors, or master/doctorate degree granting institutions. Analysis of variance between groups was used to test significance of the actual and ideal administrative role and responsibility statements for: levels of educational attainment by the chief administrator of student affairs; type of institution, that is, public or private. Analysis of variance among groups was used to test significance for years of experience of the chief administrator of student affairs for selected roles and responsibilities of the chief administrator of student affairs in Texas colleges and universities. The perceptions of the respondents revealed significant differences between the actual and the ideal administrative variables tested. There were also a few significant differences among the chief administrators of student affairs responses to the two-sided role and responsibility statements in regard to the highest degree granted from their institution, their educational attainments, their years in their present position and the type of administration of the institution. Suggestions for further studies were to access the perceptions of Texas college and university presidents with regard to the roles and responsibilities of the chief administrator of student affairs. Also, a study could be done to access the faculty or the students perceptions regarding the roles and responsibilities of the chief administrator of student services. |
