The Delphi technique was used to determine healthcare administrators' and health facility architects' predictions. This study presented its participants with propositions concerning health and disease emphases and healthcare delivery modes. The participants were asked to examine each proposition and make a prediction of how it would change and, then, how the change would impact health facility design by the year 2000. The objective of the research was to obtain a consensus of prediction within each of the two groups of professionals. Once a consensus was developed, the two group opinions were compared. The predictions of healthcare administrators and health facility architects about how health and disease emphases will change and how those changes will affect health facility design in Texas by the year 2000 were found to be similar. There were, however, three areas of significant disagreement. The differences of prediction on the incidence of disease, chronic disease, and acute care are indications that healthcare administrators and health facility architects may have considerably different expectations about both in patient care and long-term care. The predictions of healthcare administrators and health facility architects about how healthcare delivery modes will change and how those changes will affect health facility design by the year 2000 were found to differ. The two groups did not make similar predictions 33 percent of the time. The administrators and architects agreed reasonably well when the propositions were applied to the location of a mode at a hospital. However, the differences of opinion concerning the future of tertiary hospitals and general community hospitals reflect the potentially grave differences in perspective. On the other hand, there was considerable disagreement between the groups when the propositions were applied to hospital satellites or free-standing, privately owned facilities.
