Description
Abstract:The purpose of this research was to identify and evaluate the relationship between an airport and a contiguously located industrial park in order to assist public and private sector decision makers in developing industrial airports. National and regional economic conditions have forced communities to develop industrial parks as a means of attracting new jobs and has forced airports to look for new tenants. The result has been airport industrial development. An airport industrial park has been defined as an industrial development located on or adjacent to an active airport and designed to integrate air transportation into the industrial operation. A list of 172 airports having industrial activity meeting the definition above was obtained from state aviation departments, state departments of transportation, and literature searches. Fifteen airports across the country were surveyed conducted to determine the characteristics of currently developed airport industrial park. Results of the survey indicate that a viable industrial airport must be supported by a broad range of compatible industrial uses and cannot be limited to industrial aviation uses alone. Airparks concentrating in aviation related development tend to not be as successful as those airparks with more diverse industrial uses. In addition, the compatibility of different airport land uses can be defined by the function and performance of the land use based on past experience. Industrial airport development is a viable method for increasing economic activity around an airport and also a means of protecting the airport from encroaching incompatible land uses. It is essential that proper planning be done to understand and make the best use of the unique characteristics and opportunities at each airport. It is equally essential that the roles of the airport and the airport industrial park are fully understood before proceeding with development.
