| Item Description: | First edition of the "Review" was printed in London, R. and J. Dodsley, 1757. It has been attributed to various persons. Samuel Jones, in the New-York Historical Society, Collections, volumes 3, 1821, page 361, says: "This pamphlet was written in New-York, and it is believed ... that William Smith [1728-1793] afterwards chief justice of Canada, was the author; that he copied it himself, never permitting either of his clerks to see a word of it; that the manuscript was carefully nailed up ... and sent to London to be printed. The pamphlets when received from London were not publicly distributed ..." (Cited in Documentary history of the state of New York, 1849-51, volume 4, page 1054). In Smith's posthumous "History of the late province of New York", 1829, volume 2, pages 255-56, it is stated that William Alexander (who later called himself Lord Stirling) acknowledged having given the manuscript to the printer, but denied the authorship, but Smith neither hints at himself being the author, nor offers any suggestions as to who wrote the pamphlet. It is now generally believed that Alexander had the manuscript from his brother-in-law, Livingston, to whom it is attributed by his biographer Sedgwick (cf. Amer. quart. revised, 1833, volume 14, pages 12-13) by Halkett and Laing, Cushing, Sabin and the best authorities. Microfilm.
