| Item Description: | Library has: Decades 1-2. Edited by A. Gonzalez de Barcia Carballido y Zuniga; quoted as the 2d edition by some bibliographers, as the 3d by others, who quote the Antwerp edition of 1728 as the 2d. Extended in decada quinta-octava to 1554. Engraved title-pages, each with the royal coat of arms of Spain, portraits of the discoverers and conquistadores, and pictures representing events during the discovery and conquest of Spanish America or customs of its inhabitants, copied from the title-pages of the original edition (Madrid, 1601-15). Each decade has an engraved head-piece. The title-pages of the various copies of this edition differ in date: some are dated 1725, 1726, 1727, or most commonly 1730, although the last decae was printed in 1728 (cf. Medina, Bibl. hisp. amer. t. IV). The dates of the 1st and 8th decades have been altered in this copy from 1726 to 1730, that of the 5th from 1727 to 1728. Library has only Decades 1-2. Title-page of volume 4 is wanting, the Fe de erratas (second preliminary leaf) includes the errata of decada 5 and is dated Feb. 12, 1729. |
