| Item Description: | This literary magazine, a joint endeavor of James Russell Lowell and Robert Carter, was intended to provide a substitute for the sentimental fiction so popular at that time. It was to contain original material and articles from the best American authors; however, only three numbers were published. It included poetry, art criticism, musical comment, book reviews, and writings by Lowell and Poe, and was illustrated with wood and steel engravings. Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.
