The first really important American magazine in the field of education. It emphasized physical and moral training, and advocated education for women and physical education for both boys and girls. It was chiefly devoted to early or elementary education. In 1830, the Journal of Education began to devoted much space to the lyceums and became, to an extent, the organ of the lyceum movement. Cf.
