Abstract:Three radioactive Fe sources were used in a 3 phase study 1) greenhouse experiment to distinguish sorghum (sorghum bicolor) Fe uptake between indigenous and applied, 2) movement of Fe in the soils by mass-flow, and 3) self diffusion coefficients of Fe in the soils. A greenhouse study was conducted by using three soils classified as Lake Charles clay, Zapata clay loam, and Edna sandy loam. The first two soils are calcareous and have a pH of 8.2 and 8.3, respectively. The third soil is slightly acid with a pH of 6.8. Three Fe Sources FeEDDHA, FeSO₄, and powdered metallic Fe) were irradiated and applied to soils at 5 rates. Chelated FeEDDHA was applied as a solution at rates of 0.1, 0.5, 2.5, 5 and 10 ppm ⁵⁹Fe. The FeSO4 was applied as a solution at rates of 2.5, 25, 50, 100 and 250 ppm ⁵⁹Fe. All Fe materials were mixed thoroughly with 3000 g of each soil. Sorghum plants were grown about 8 weeks for two consecutive crops in the same Fe treated pots.
