| Abstract: | The purpose of this study was to describe the level of anxiety and depression in participants attending a divorce workshop sponsored by the Divorce Ministry of the Family Life Office of the Catholic Galveston-Houston Diocese. One-hundred forty-six divorced subjects attending an annual workshop conference for divorced persons in Houston, Texas participated in this study. The participants completed the following inventories: The Personal Data Inventory, used to compile the descriptive data; the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (Y1 form), a measure of the level of state anxiety; and the Beck Depression Inventory, a measure of depth or intensity of depression. Descriptive data for the biographical characteristics of the participants were determined. Correlational analysis was used to determine the relationship between each of the biographical characteristics and anxiety and depression. Multiple regression was used to determine the relative ability of the selected biographical characteristics to predict anxiety and depression scores. Results indicated that the divorced participants overall were relatively healthy and within the normal range of anxiety and depression. Significant negative correlations were found between state anxiety and the Length of Separation and Divorce, as well as between state anxiety and Who Made the Final Decision. Results also indicated that Length of Separation and Divorce and Who Made the Final Decision were predictive of state anxiety. Regression results for depression were nonsignificant. Support Group Membership correlated significantly with depression. |
