"Charles Durang wrote a series of articles dealing with the history of the Philadelphia theatre from 1749 to 1855 for the Philadelphia Sunday Dispatch based on his own observations and partly compiled from the papers of his father, John Durang. Thompson Westcott arranged these clippings into a single work of several volumes, interspersing throughout the text portraits of the famous actors of the period,...play bills, private correspondence of the author and other theatrical figures...." "A list of actors and actresses with adopted stage names and their real names precedes the text." "Also preceding the text is a list of the maiden and married names of actresses." Volume VII contains a "collection of theatrical programs of concerts, operas, and other musical events for the years 1844-1861.... A comparison of handwriting...indicates that Westcott was also the collator of the additional material."
