| Abstract: | Criteria for the analysis and synthesis of decentralized control systems are developed. The criteria may be used for any desired nominal control structure. It gives qualitative as well as quantitative information regarding the loss in performance of the control system caused by the use of a simplified or nominal model for the design of the controller. The criteria are originally developed from the similarity between the problem of solving a linear set of equations by use of the Jacobi Iteration method and the servo-control problem in a multiloop control system. The criteria are then extended to all types of control structures by analyzing the similarity between the problem of selecting a first order linear iterative method for solving a set of linear equations and the synthesis of decentralized control systems. This analysis establishes the duality between concepts such as convergence and rate of convergence in the iterative methods and the concepts of performance and stability in the decentralized control framework. Based on this duality it is possible to apply important results from the theory of linear iterative methods to further develop the proposed criteria. |
