| Abstract: | Some time before A.D. 1515, a Spanish ship wrecked on Molasses Reef in the Turks and Caicos Islands, B.W.I. Archaeological excavation of the site, directed by the author, was begun in 1982 by the Institute of Nautical Archaeology. The objective of this Project is to identify the ship. The methodology employed is an inductive, multidisciplinary archaeological investigation utilizing nautical archaeology as a research tool of historical geography. At this writing the investigation is incomplete. Analyses of the artifacts and ballast samples recovered are integrated to derive the most probable date and nationality of the vessel, and the result is interpreted against the historical setting to suggest a generalized identity for the ship and her mission. Plans for future research are outlined. |
