Coronel no tiene quien le escriba, first published in 1961, is a novella by Gabriel García Márquez about an impoverished, retired colonel who waits 15 years for a promised pension that never arrives, symbolizing lost hope and dignity in post-civil war Colombia. The colonel lives with his asthmatic wife in poverty in the fictional town of Macondo, surviving on meager means, pinning their hopes on a fighting rooster left by their dead son, while facing poverty and the absurdity of their situation. García Márquez considered it his best work, believing One Hundred Years of Solitude was necessary to make people read it.
