Twenty-three letters written by Mrs. Louise Smith Clappe to her sister, Mary Jane, in Massachusetts, 1851-52, in which she signed herself "Dame Shirley". They were originally published serially in "The Pioneer; or, California monthly magazine", January, 1854-December, 1855; published in book form in 1922 by T. C. Russell under title: The Shirley letters from California mines in 1851-52.
