The "Life of John C. Calhoun" (pages [3]-74) has been commonly attributed to R. M. T. Hunter. It was, however, written by Calhoun himself, according to a statement made in 1854 by R. B. Rhett, in a letter to R. K. Cralle, editor of Calhoun's works. cf. Gaillard Hunt's John C. Calhoun, Philadelphia, 1908, pages 250-251.
