Description
Abstract:The objective of this study was to determine the role of Type A behavior, self-referencing and spouse's behavior type in the development of coronary artery disease. To accomplish this objective the contribution of behavior type of the patient and spouse, patient self-referencing and the interactions of these variables to the severity of coronary artery disease (CAD) was determined. A sample of 112 male patients and their wives were studied. The patient's behavior type and his wife's behavior type and patient's extent of self-referencing were assessed by the Type A interview. The severity of CAD was documented by coronary angiography. Two multiple regression models were constructed. The predictor variables in both models were patient's age, patient's Type A behavior, wife's Type A behavior, patient's self-referencing and the interactions of patient and wife's behavior type and of patient behavior and self-referencing. The criterion variable in Model One was the number of occluded arteries and in Model Two the criterion variable was an index of disease severity. In Model One none of the predictor variables accounted for variation in the number of occluded arteries. In Model Two only age accounted for significant variability in the index of disease severity. Type A behavior was not related to severity of disease in this study nor was wife's behavior type, patient self-referencing or the interaction of these variables with the patient's behavior type.
