Abstract:It is known that the Kirchhoff Theory neglects the effects of transverse stresses on the displacement functions. Thus the validity of Kirchhoff Theory is suspect for laminated beams if the material properties vary significantly between layers. Although there have been many attempts to account for transverse effects, almost all attempts have assumed the displacement or the strain variation to be a smooth linear function with the transverse direction. A theory based on Kozik's exact displacement formulation is developed to determine the interlaminar transverse shear and normal stresses in heterogeneous laminated beams. The transverse effects are introduced in terms of transverse strain derivatives along the longitudinal axis solely from kinematical considerations. The results show that the developed theory predicts stress fields which are in excellent agreement with elasticity solutions as well as with strength of material solutions for homogeneous laminated beams. In the case of heterogeneous laminated beams, the results indicate that material heterogeneity causes deviation from the bending stresses predicted by strength of materials solutions.
