| Abstract: | The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of industrial arts upon the vocational development of seventh and eighth grade students. In order to accomplish the evaluation, change in vocational maturity was measured by examining the pre- and posttest scores on the Career Maturity Inventory Attitude Scale and the Occupational Information, Goal Selection, and Planning Scales of the CMI Competence Test. Also examined was the effect of industrial arts upon a pre- to posttest change in idealistic and realistic occupational aspiration, relative to technology. The results of both examinations were similar; that is, industrial arts did not have a significant positive or negative influence upon change in vocational maturity or change in occupational aspiration. Thus, the general conclusion was that industrial arts was no more effective in enhancing vocational development than were other activities and experiences available to control group students in the study. The study also examined the correlations between and among dependent and independent variables, and the effects of the moderator variables of sex, intelligence, and socioeconomic status upon a change in pre- to posttest vocational maturity and occupational aspirations. Conclusions drawn from the examination supported previous research which had found differences between males and females on levels of vocational maturity and correlation between intelligence and vocational maturity. However, the impact of socioeconomic status upon vocational development often reported in previous research was not supported by the study. |
