| Abstract: | The desmid populations at 217 locations in 27 counties of the Oak-Hickory-Pine Forest Vegetation Region of east Texas have been studied; 284 species, 63 additional varieties, 11 additional forms were identified in this first comprehensive desmid survey in Texas. Both living and preserved specimens were examined and identifications were made with the aid of drawings, photographs and permanent slides. Two interesting and possibly unique desmid-rich habitats were sampled bimonthly and results are discussed to illustrate population trends and morphological variations within species. Included in this work are taxonomic descriptions from the literature, east Texas distribution data and measurement (both from literature and from the present research), 74 photographic plates and 13 drawing plates. |
