| Abstract: | The genetic control of cattle lymphocyte alloantigens was analyzed in this study. Lymphocttes from three breeds of cattle, Holstein, Jersey and Hereford, were typed with 276 different antisera. The sera were obtained from four groups of donors. First, from 17 multiparous cows which had been immunized with red cell preparations. Second, 243 multiparous cows with no previous history of immunization. Third, 4 multiparous cows which had been alloimmunized with leukocyte preparations. Fourth, cows with no prior immunization who were in various stages of gestation with their first calf. The number of antibody specificites increased with antigenic stimulation. Red cell immunization increased the number of lymphocytotoxic antibodies in multiparous cows as did the effect of several pregnancies. Confounding the effects of immunization and pregnancy appeared to also stimulate the production of several antibodies. Antileukocyte sera, prepared by immunization of allogenic leukocyte preparations, also produced sera with multiple specificities. Sera produced in non-immunized cows provided sera which were used to determine the genetic control of lymphocyte antigens. |
