| Abstract: | Experiment 1: Four mature horses fitted with posterior ileal cannulas were randomly assigned to experimental rations in a 4x4 latin square design. Treatments consisted of feeding concentrate rations containing crimped oats (CO), micronized oats (MO), crimpled sorghum (CS) or micronized sorghums (MS). The horses were fed a 50:50 concentrate:roughage diet at 2% of body weight to meet N.R.C. (1973) requirements. Within each 14 day digestion trial period: Cr2O3 was included in the rations on day 3 through 12, fecal samples were collected on days 6 through 11, ileal samples were collected on day 12 and jugular samples were collected on day 14. Ileal samples and blood samples were collected at 15 min intervals and 30 min intervals, respectively, for 6 hr post feeding. Total tract dry matter, crude protein, gross energy, crude fiber, nitrogen free extract and starch digestion and prececal and postileal digestion of dry matter and starch was determined. Dry matter, gross energy, crude fiber, nitrogen free extract and starch digestion was not different (P>.05) between the rations. Crude protein digestion of the CO or MO rations was higher (P<.05) than the CS rations. Crude protein digestion of the MO ration was higher (P<.01) than the CS ration and higher (P<.05) than the MS ration. |
