Description
Abstract:Partition coefficients (Kp-values) for five nucleotides, four nucleosides and ten amino acids were determined to cationic and anionic micelles. Kp-values of all amino acids for cationic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide micelles were below the limit of detection (Kp =8). On the other hand, nucleotides partition strongly to both cationic and anionic micelles. Both the orientation and surface density of nucleotides were determined on different micellar surfaces. Nucleotides and nucleosides were shown to partition selectively to anionic micelles while polynucleotides (transfer ribonucleic acids) partition selectively to cationic micelles. 5'-Thymidylic acid was shown to oligomerize in cationic reversed micelles. Rate constants and activation parameters were determined for the reaction. Thymidine was phosphorylated under similar conditions as well. Normal and reversed micellar cetyltrimethylammonium bicarbonate was shown to catalyze the formation of high molecular weight polypeptides from amino acyl adenylates. A micellar separation of tRNAs was also demonstrated.
