| Abstract: | The range livestock industry of the trans-Mississippi West, or some facet of this broad topic, has been the subject of several thousand published works, and numerous books on the subject continue to be published each year. Noticeably absent from the few literature surveys that have been published on the subject, however, is any general study of women on the range cattle frontier. The part that women played in connection with the range cattle industry has been largely overlooked, or at least underestimated. This study, based primarily on diaries, letters, journal, reminiscences, and other personal accounts written by women who lived on or visited western ranches, not only dispelled the myth that no woman ever went up the cattle trail, it showed that some women were economically involved in the cattle industry with full responsibilities for ranching operations. Not all women who lived in the cattle country were entrepreneurs, however, and the study included other aspects of the women's lives, such as their adaptation to the environment; their homes and details of daily activities; their social and cultural activities; and their attitudes regarding their experiences. Some comparisons were made between the ranchwomen and women who lived on army posts, in mining camps, and on farms. Comparisons were also made between the women in the range cattle country and fictional women characters in early twentieth century Western novels. Although the women did admit to some hardships and privations, their writings tended to support the idea that life on the range was as wonderful and exciting as it has often been portrayed.
