| Summary: | The urban centers of the United Arab Emirates are expanding and changing very rapidly. Not only are they becoming larger and more densely populated, but their physical character has changed, due largely to external influences. In a time of rapid expansion, it would be unrealistic to prepare a long-range or inflexible plan, especially where few reliable data are available. Therefore, urban design guidelines should be general and adaptive, to respond to changing situations. This study endeavors to develop contemporary urban design guidelines for the central area of the city of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It will provide a basic framework, within which the city can begin to implement proposals and to guide future planning. The study begins with a definition of urban design and a review of literature and contemporary methodologies in selected North American cities. Following, the Arab town in history is analyzed in terms of its physical and social morphology. Then, the early Arab courtyard house and the various forces that shaped the house in the urban fabric are discussed. These forces include an understanding of nature, a precise feeling for environmental conditions, and a knowledge of the social, religious, and economic factors. Establishing contemporary urban design guidelines for the United Arab Emirates requires a detailed analysis of the physical, social, and economic environment of its urban centers. Such analysis is presented in this study, including a review of the growth patterns in the seven Emirates and recommendations for solving problems facing the evolution of physical planning at the national scale. As a "basis for this study, the physical inventory and an analysis of the interrelationship of social, economic, and physical factors of the city of Dubai and it^ Central Area are thoroughly examined and supported "by a recent survey (19?6) conducted by the city's consultantsj Prinsloo, Graham, International Group, and El-Amin Muddathir Associates. Forecasts for future population growth, employment, floor space, traffic, parking, and demand for municipal services are also included. Based on the previous inventory and analysis, assessment of the quality of the urban environment and issues raised by the residents through the attitude survey, the Central Area goals and proposed urban design guidelines are presented, concluding with recommendations for continuing research based on the concepts and ideas introduced in this work. |
