Abstract:The purpose of this study was to determine the role of the superintendent in Texas as perceived by the super-intendent and his school board president. By synthesizing the data from three previous studies and utilizing several different statistical techniques, a state-wide study was produced that (a) determined the role of the superintendent as perceived by the superintendent and his school board president; (b) determined any difference in the role as perceived by the two respondent groups; (c) determined any difference in the role perceived by the two groups which may be associated with the superintendent's and board president's age, educational level, and the total years of experience in their respective positions. The superintendent's total years as a superintendent and the board president's membership on the board at the time of appointment of the superintendent were also considered. The school district's size, wealth, and setting were associated with the role perceived by the two groups. The study also (d) determined any difference between and/or among the three studies in the role of the superintendent as perceived by the two groups; (e) determined any difference in the role of the superintendent as perceived by the two groups between and/or among the nine dimensions of administrative behavior; and (f) produced a state-wide profile of the superintendent and the board president..
