| Summary: | "Prior to the mid-1980s, Hinojosa was writing principally in Spanish. He was fully bilingual and wrote equally brilliantly in Spanish and English. Rolando Hinojosa grew up in Mercedes, Texas, went to school in both Mercedes and in Northern Mexico, which promoted his fluency in English and Spanish. He joined the U.S. Army at age 17 and served in Korea. Upon his discharge, Hinojosa enrolled at UT Austin [and then] the Ph.D.program at the University of Illinois.
