| Abstract: | This research presents the development of a set of criteria for the conceptual design of a large scale information system. These criteria were developed from a study of the literature in the MIS field and from a Delphi questionnaire. For the Delphi study, noted authors and practitioners were consulted concerning necessary factors for each of eight phases of conceptual design. The eight categories utilized for these studies were: (1) feasibility study, (2) requirements analysis, (3) system specifications, (4) system design, (5) coding and programming, (6) testing, (7) documentation, and (8) implementation. Criteria developed through the above-mentioned methods were then applied to three large, viable information systems: Southwestern Bell Telephone Company's BISCUS/FACS system, American Airlines SABRE system, and the Weyerhaeuser Company's information system. How these companies have utilized these criteria in part or in their entirety is discussed. |
