| Abstract: | The purpose of the study was to determine whether, and to what extent, mental illness was assessed in eight selected behavioral descriptions according to the following predictor variables: correctness of previously applied psychotic or neurotic diagnostic labels; sex of hypothetical patient; sex of previous diagnostician; sex, educational level, years of counseling experience, professional organization and membership class of counseling psychologist and school counselor respondents. Four hundred subjects were selected by stratified random sampling procedures from the populations of the American Psychological Association - Division of Counseling Psychology and the American Personnel and Guidance Association - Association of School Counselors. A sample of 200 members was drawn from each professional organization, of which 100 subjects were male and 100 were female. In February, rv?6, each subject was mailed a research package which contained a cover letter which explained the task, a demographic characteristics questionnaire and four mental illness task presentations, i.e., case variations. Each presentation consisted of the name of a hypothetical male or female patient, a correct or incorrect diagnosis, a brief behavioral description, the name of a hypothetical male or female diagnostician and an equal interval seven-point assessment of mental illness scale. An assessment of a "1" denoted no degree of mental illness, a "7" denoted a severe degree of mental illness. Appropriate notations were also made below the numbers in between. Subjects were asked to assess each of the four presentations received.. |
